The number of vacancies in the Netherlands has fallen by 12.000 in the third quarter of 2023, according to new data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). The total number of vacancies in the Netherlands fell to 416.000 at the end of September, while the number of unemployed people rose by 16.000 to 366.000.

Only education, public administration and agriculture vacancies in the Netherlands rose

According to the statistics, the only industries that saw the number of vacancies rise were education, public administration, and agriculture. In the transport and storage industry and the information and communication industry, the number of vacancies remained the same. In all other sectors, the number of vacancies fell.

The most vacancies overall were found in trade, business services and healthcare. These industries together account for half of all vacancies in the Netherlands.

Unemployment rises in the Netherlands

At the same time, unemployment also rose in the third quarter of 2023. While the percentage of people unemployed in the Netherlands only increased by a small percentage from 3,5 to 3,6 percent, that equates to 366.000 people in the Netherlands who are now unemployed – 16.000 more than in the quarter before.

Youth unemployment increased the most in quarter three, with the percentage of unemployed workers up to age 25 rising from 8,2 to 8,7 percent. In the 25 to 44 age group, unemployment also rose from 2,8 to 2,9 percent, while workers in the 45 to 75-year-old category remained stable at 2,1 percent.
