The map of the newly opened restaurant is versatile. From a bara (a fried bun with spices) to saoto soup: they have it all here.
Not the first case
Lana is 20 years and knows what it’s like to have your own business. She ran a sweet shop in Delft for years and also worked as a caterer. Then she thought it was time for a new step. When the previous owners of the place in the food hall indicated to stop, she saw her chance. Starting Lana’s Surinam Kitchen is not only a fresh start from a business point of view, but also on a personal level. Lana talks about the aggressive form of breast cancer she has had. Fortunately, she is now well again.
Learning to cook from her mother-in-law
“When my husband and I moved in together, he had one wish and that was that I could cook the same as his mother,” says Lana. She spent many hours in the kitchen with her Surinamese mother-in-law and received tips and tricks for preparing and cooking Surinamese dishes. Of course she doesn’t want to reveal this, but we at indebuurt Den Haag have tasted and there was indeed a twist given to the dishes.

The chicken curry
The chicken is tender, the pepper is spicy and the dishes are fresh: exactly as you can expect from a good Surinamese place. “My chicken curry is the best seller so far. People come back especially for this.” According to Lana, this is because of her way of preparing. For example, washing the chicken with lemon is very important and only the best chicken breast is good enough for her chicken curry.
The menu
The menu of Lana’s Surinam Kitchen has a lot to offer, saoto soup for example. This is a soup with chicken, celery and topped with chips. They also have stuffed baras, cod and roti. Something that stands out on the counter are the Berliner bulbs. Not really Surinamese you would think, but you are wrong. Lana makes these balls herself and uses a Surinamese syrup instead of cream or jam. A Berliner bun with a Surinamese twist.

Despite the fact that the store only opens at twelve o’clock, Lana is already cooking early in the morning. “My alarm clock rings 00.00 hours and at 08. hours I’m already in the kitchen.” Everything she sells in her shop is made according to family recipes. From the baras to the soup: everything is prepared with love. I spend hours in the kitchen hoping to make people happy with my food. When someone says something like that, it makes me very happy,” she says.
