AKO was a regular spot for residents for years who wanted to buy something quickly before boarding the train. This will change from July 1. The reason? NS announced in 26 that no rental contracts are more often concluded with businesses that sell smoking products. And that is the crux according to AKO’s parent company, Audax. Audax says it is not profitable to stay open if the business is not allowed to sell smoking products. That is why all branches in the Netherlands whose lease contract ends this year are closing.
End of rental contracts
The branches at The Hague CS, Dordrecht, Heerlen, Zaandam stations will be closed closed as of July 1. The branches at the stations of Alkmaar, Almere Centrum, Deventer, Enschede, Hilversum, Leeuwarden, Rotterdam Alexander, Schiedam Centrum and Tilburg will follow at the end of this year. It is not yet known what will be in the buildings now.
Amsterdamse Kiosk Onderneming
AKO saw in 1878 was born under the name Amsterdamse Kiosk Onderneming. At the time, the business mainly sold newspapers to travelers. AKO is now a national chain and you will find the shops mainly at stations, but also at airports.
