Another week, another (sunny) public holiday: forecasts say the Netherlands will enjoy a sunny Whit Sunday and Whit Monday this year, with temperatures ranging from 17 to 23 degrees throughout the weekend.
Nice weather on the cards for the long weekend
While last year saw unseasonably cold weather over the pinksterweekend, things are looking up this year. After last weekend’s sunny long weekend, the Netherlands is set to see another couple of days of decent weather this week, allowing people across the country to really make the most of the public holiday on Monday.
According to Weerplaza, the weather this weekend should remain dry across most of the country, with plenty of sunshine on the cards. On Saturday and Sunday, temperatures will range from lows of around 17 degrees in coastal areas like Scheveningen and Zandvoort, to highs of 23 degrees in Eindhoven and Maastricht.
Similar conditions are expected on Whit Monday, when it will be around 17 degrees in cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht. Regardless of how warm it is in your area, Weerplaza notes that it will be sunny, and warns that the UV index will be at least six for the whole weekend, meaning you could burn after as little as 10 or 15 minutes in the sun.
The Netherlands records first summer day of 2023
It might have taken a while, but this year the Netherlands recorded its first local summer day of the year after temperatures in Gelderland soared above 25 degrees on May 22. The country’s last summer day (i.e. when temperatures reach at least 25 degrees) was on September 13. Last year, the first summer day of the season occurred slightly earlier, on May 9.
In Hupsel, just a stone’s throw away from the German border, temperatures peaked at 25,7 degrees on Monday afternoon. Other towns and cities in the east of the country also saw the mercury rise above the 25-degree mark.
