The municipality presented the annual account for 2022 on 10 May 2023. The Municipal Council, residents, businesses and organisations can see how the municipality spent its budget. The Hague spent more than € 3 billion in the city last year.

A lot of things happened in 2022. Such as the war in Ukraine, rising prices and high costs for energy. These had a major impact on many residents, businesses and organisations in our city. The municipality tried to cushion these blows as much as possible.

3rd city in the NetherlandsThe Hague is the 3rd largest city in the Netherlands with 560,000 residents. The size of the city means big challenges and the need for investments. For example, in benefits, poverty reduction, youth care, sustainability measures, housing and street cleaning.

Together with the cityThe municipality naturally does not do all of this alone, but together with its partners in the city. Such as businesses, cultural organisations, clubs and (sports) foundations. But especially the many residents who try each day to make their neighbourhood better.

€ 3,343 million in income (2022) € 3,288 million in expenditures (2022) Positive resultThe annual account is negative for a number of themes. This mainly involves urban development and housing. These themes were affected by general developments in the Netherlands. Because everything is becoming more expensive, labour costs are rising while the income from building land is failing to keep pace.

Nevertheless the bottom line for 2022 still showed a positive result of more than € 55 million. The plus of 1.7% on the entire annual account is due to a number of reasons. For example delays on a number of projects because they do not have enough staff. And material delivery problems for construction projects. The number of people with welfare benefits decreased although the municipality budgeted for this number to rise.

The municipality received a 1-time payment of € 10 million from the Dutch government in December 2022. Because this sum of money came late in the year, the municipality did not spend it in 2022. The amount however can be found in the annual account.

Supplementing financial reservesThanks to the positive result the municipality can supplement its financial reserves. The general reserves are an important financial buffer for the city. The reserves are large enough again for the first time since the corona crisis. The accountant has signed off on the annual account.
