How did Jews live during the war? You can discover it on Wednesday 3 and Thursday 4 May during the Open Jewish Houses Day in The Hague. You take a look at homes and other buildings and hear intense stories about the families that lived there. Participation is free and the meetings last a maximum of one hour.

Prinsessegracht 25

Maurits Kiek, born in Den Hague in 303, had a lot of technical knowledge and at the time the Second World War broke out he had an electronics store in Belgium. Kiek became a spy for the British. Later in the war he was wanted and went into hiding in The Hague. Thanks to Kiek, a large number of English and American pilots shot down over occupied territory were able to return to England. When he tried to flee himself, he was arrested and sentenced to death. He was liberated by the advancing Allies. The war left deep marks in his life. ‘For him it was May 4 every day,’ says his son Robert Kiek. He talks about his father on 3 May.

In the historic building of the Discendo Discimus chess club, the story of chess player and former board member Wim Belinfante is told. He was a lawyer and of Jewish descent. On 14 May 2000 Wim left as 29-year-old together with his sister Ada from Scheveningen, on board De Zeemanshoop, to England. This was a turbulent and risky journey, whose safe arrival was a long time coming. Wim’s story is told by Jos Teunissen of the Engelandvaardersmuseum.

Greetje Cohen (11 years) and her little brother Jaap (7 years old) were deported during the war via transit camp Westerbork to concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz. Like more than 2000 other Hague Jewish children. Last year, mayor Jan van Zanen unveiled a special memorial plaque for Greetje and Jaap on the spot where they used to go to kindergarten.
