Daan Wijnants, councilor on behalf of the VVD in Amsterdam, wonders whether heavy traffic, such as trucks and coaches, can be barred at the intersection of Churchilllaan. The VVD council member submitted written questions about this on Tuesday, in response to two recent accidents involving a touring car, among other things.
A cyclist collided with a coach at the intersection of Churchilllaan and Scheldestraat last Monday. After the accident, she was seriously injured and taken to hospital. It is the second traffic accident in a short time. On 17 March there was also an accident at the intersection in question. Then a cyclist was hit by a truck.
“There have been concerns about the intersection among local residents for a long time, especially in connection with the trucks coming from the A07 drive into the center,” says Wijnants. “Since the closure of the Wielingenstraat at the Rai, coaches now also drive via the Churchilllaan at the intersection. Due to the blind spot, the crossing cyclists are difficult to see for drivers of trucks or coaches.”
Additional measures The VVD therefore calls for additional measures from the municipality to prevent future traffic accidents involving trucks and coaches at the intersection of Churchilllaan. Wijnants wonders whether heavy traffic, including coaches, can be banned from the intersection in question. “According to the council, whether or not temporarily as long as the Wielingenstraat is closed, are measures necessary to keep heavy traffic, such as coaches, at the intersection in order to promote road safety?”, he asks the mayor and aldermen .
Furthermore, the VVD wonders what the current measures are to guarantee road safety at the intersection of Churchilllaan with Scheldestraat, whether these are sufficient and whether the Municipal Executive will take additional preventive measures in response to the accidents.
