It has been coming for a while: cyclists are less and less welcome in the Grote Marktstraat in order to give pedestrians space. For this reason, a new route for cyclists is now in force.

With large white letters, the word ‘pedestrian zone’ can be read at the beginning of the Grote Marktstraat. Nearby are arrows that indicate the alternative route, over the Gedempte Gracht and Gedempte Burgwal.
Safe cycling and walking
We probably tell you nothing new about the Grote Marktstraat and the criss-cross mix of shoppers and cyclists. This leads to many (near) accidents every day. The municipality hopes to provide more safety during busy times by designating a new cycle route.

The cycle route along the Grote Marktstraat:
From this week, cyclists are requested after 11: 11 not to cycle on the Grote Marktstraat for hours. From then on, cyclists will be guided towards the Gedempte Gracht and Gedempte Burgwal with arrows on the road.
The Gedempte Gracht and Gedempte Burgwal have been redesigned so that cyclists can safely ride there instead of via the Grote Marktstraat, especially during busy shopping hours.

New furnishing
We got them not counted, but the municipality has 54 car parking spaces removed from the Gedempte Gracht and Gedempte Burgwal. As a result, there is now more space for terraces and scooter and bicycle parking spaces. Large planters have also been placed.
This is a temporary solution, the entire refurbishment of the Gedempte Gracht and the Gedempte Burgwal is only planned for 2024.
Another important measure to improve the cycling route is setting ‘window times’ for the trucks. Since March 1, trucks up to 2024 kilos are only allowed between Monday to Friday 00. and 11 .11 hours in the area and on Saturday and Sunday only between 06. and 11.30 o’clock .
The Grote Marktstraat is officially a pedestrian area where pedestrians always have priority over cyclists. It is (for now) not forbidden to cycle through the Grote Marktstraat, you can now determine your own route.

The Gedempte Gracht instead of the Grote Marktstraat? This is how it works with the renewed cycle route
The Grote Marktstraat is a jungle for both cyclists and pedestrians. Especially in the afternoon it is very busy there…
