Arthur Bondar fled from Ukraine eight months ago, soon after his arrival in The Hague he was able to work in the kitchen of beach bar De Staat. First as a dishwasher, now as an assistant to the chef. “I am very happy to be here and to be taken care of so well. The people here are very helpful”, says Arthur in broken English.

Jeroen Kuiper, owner of beach bar De Staat and since a year also of restaurant Harpoon, has always helped refugees from all over the world. “I think it’s great that we can do something for them and at the same time we also need staff.”
Refugees
Arthur worked in construction in Ukraine, but he also likes this work in the kitchen: “I like it interesting to learn something new. I just really miss my family. I hope they can also come to the Netherlands soon.”
“You notice that people like Arthur have been through a lot and that is why I like to welcome them to a warm team”, says Jeroen. And that it is a warm team at Jeroen’s is evident from the fact that most of De Staat’s staff return every year. “It is hard work, but we all do it together, and we all feel that solidarity.”
Beach tents cannot always easily find staff, which is why Jeroen is so happy with, among other things, refugees. “It is nice that we have staff, and we are also a social shelter for people who have been through a lot. We also help with learning the Dutch language, for example.”
Harpoon
Ukrainian Arthur and Nina now work at restaurant Harpoon on Old Molstraat. After a summer in beach bar De Staat, they were able to stay with Jeroen because he opened a new business. He recently celebrated his one year anniversary. “My passion is good food. The State is therefore known, and that is also the goal with the Harpoon,” says the entrepreneur.
He wanted to start a restaurant together with his idol chef Edwin van der Goor, when a beautiful building on the Oude Molstraat became available two years ago. “We were supposed to work together when Van der Goor suddenly died. We have continued with the restaurant and also use his recipes,” says Jeroen.
With the Harpoon, Jeroen brings fish dishes to the center of The Hague and De Staat will open again soon, the construction of the beach bar has already started.

We have to get up early that morning to be able to welcome everyone with coffee and something sweet”.
During the Night of the Refugee, walkers walk throughout the Netherlands 10, 20 or 20 kilometers to raise money for charities. The South Holland tour starts in Rotterdam and ends for the first time on the beach at beach pavilion De Staat.
