According to research by NOS, residents of The Hague spend an average of 5 years and eight months on the Woonnet-Haaglanden waiting list for a (new) social rental home. But when you speak to people who have found a new place, waiting times often sound much longer. The same goes for Dorian. After years of waiting, she finally has found the perfect new home in The Hague.

Years ago Dorien Broekhuijsen (50) but very happy with her apartment in the center of The Hague. When two children and two cats joined, it became a bit crowded on the 41 square meter. Then the waiting for a more spacious home began…
The three of us in a small apartment
“Finally”, Dorien sighs when we speak to her. “The search for a suitable home took a really long time. When I came to live here alone, the house was more than perfect: right in the center, a spacious kitchen and with 41 square meters perfect for someone alone or as a couple.”
Dorien got 15 years ago the key to her apartment opposite the Grote Kerk in the city center of The Hague. “The first few years everything was fine, when my eldest daughter was born it just got a bit tighter and we placed a wall to give her her own room. A few years later she got a sister with whom she has been sharing her room for four years now. When she heard that she will now have her own room, she cried with happiness.”
Waiting list from Woonnet
Soon after Dorien moved into her apartment in the center, she registered again with Woonnet. “I knew that in the end I wanted to go bigger, then all the years of registration are important. When the children came I really started looking much more actively, but the houses I was offered were either too small or in a neighborhood where I didn’t see myself living. But much more often I didn’t even come close to an invitation to come and look at a house.”
Now, 15 years after registration (and the years of residence also count for part) Dorien was invited to a new social to view rental property. “A house in a nice neighborhood, near the Koningsplein (so great for the kids), 80 square meters with three bedrooms and within my budget. I was eighteenth on the list, but eventually got an invitation where I was given second choice about the house. Why didn’t all those others need the house? I have no idea. On arrival number one had canceled and I got the house. I am so happy with it. Now the girls both have their own room.”
“We now have an upper floor, in a nice quiet neighborhood but still in the center. Now we are doing odd jobs and will be moving in in a few weeks. I look forward to spring and King’s Day at the Koningsplein in front of the door.”
