Today, 31 October, we speak the Hague Johan. He has a curious story about when he worked as a night porter at Hotel Andante in Scheveningen.
Keys
“I spent two years, with great pleasure, at Hotel Andante the Seinpostduin. It is a nice hotel with friendly people. Despite the fact that it is haunted there, I have never been afraid”, Johan begins his story. The modern main building of the hotel on Scheveningen was built in 1969. In 2014 a Russian woman bought it, just like the neighboring villa ‘Hotel Hage ‘ from 1885.

“1 June 2014 the renovated hotel is open. Two days earlier I was able to work there as a night porter. Those first nights there were no guests so I had little to do. To keep myself occupied, I was allowed to attach the metal key rings with room numbers to the keys. When I was done with that and all 23 keys hung neatly on the wall I went to read a book in the lobby. Suddenly I heard clattering. At the reception I saw the keys to the rooms 62 to 86 move as if someone passed it with a hand.”
Ramen
Johan worked four nights a week from 23.00 until 10.00 hours at the hotel. Every night he made his rounds around the rooms. “To get to the villa from the main building, I had to cross the Seinpostduin outside. One summer evening I saw from outside the windows of the room 85 and 86 are wide open. There were no guests in those rooms, so I closed the windows. When I was outside again, the windows were open again. I went back inside and said ‘I don’t know who is doing this, but now you’re closing them’ and I closed the windows.”
There were many more more strange events: suddenly at 3 am the radio in the breakfast room was on and another night the oven was preheating.

Woman
Johan was not the only one who experienced strange things. Also his colleagues. One said that in the breakfast room the salt and pepper shakers had been changed three times, another heard knocking on doors and windows and two of them actually saw an apparition.
“The other night porter told me he had seen a woman. There were no guests in the main building that night, yet he made his rounds there. He took the elevator to the fifth floor. As he looked through the porthole in the elevator, he saw on the fourth floor a woman with long hair in a long blue robe. He wasn’t the only one who saw her. Not much later, a cleaner told me that she was at room 81 saw a woman walk in. While that room was not rented out at the time. When she entered the room there was no one.”
Johan may know who this woman is. “A taxi driver came in once, he knew the hotel and thought it was beautiful after the renovation. I asked him if it used to be haunted and he said the following: One night in 2009 or 1969 he saw a woman from the fifth floor jump to death. He witnessed that. I knew immediately, our ghost had to be that woman.”
Scared
“ I’ve never been scared, I didn’t feel any evil energy in the hotel either. I don’t think the woman was angry. I enjoyed my work very much, but I now know for sure that ghosts exist”, says Johan.
