The Banner Carrier, a painting by Rembrandt van Rijn is coming to The Hague. The painting can be seen in our city for a month.

Last year the painting De Vaandeldrager was purchased by the government and the Rijksmuseum, among others. In order to not only allow visitors to that museum to enjoy the painting by Rembrandt, it is on tour through the Netherlands.

175 million euros

From Tuesday 1 to Wednesday 30 November the painting can be found in the Mauritshuis in The Hague. In 2023 175 million was ticked for the painting. A considerable amount, and to allow as many people as possible to enjoy this masterpiece, it is going on a journey. Every month the painting hangs in a museum of one of the 12 Dutch provinces.

The painting passes by Utrecht, then Alkmaar, Assen, Almere, Den Bosch, Enschede, Arnhem, Middelburg, Maastricht and finally Groningen.

13 Rembrandts

The Mauritshuis has no fewer than 13 Rembrandts in November at home, 13 from our own collection, Rembrandt’s famous self-portrait from 1658 and The Flag Bearer. Rembrandt’s self-portrait is on loan from The Frick Collection in New York for the Manhattan Masters exhibition until 13 January.

Free Entry

The nice thing is that the painting can be visited for free in every museum for at least 1 day. The entire Mauritshuis can therefore be visited free of charge on Sunday 6 November.

The next museum that The Standard Bearer will visit is Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede. After the tour (13 July 2023) the painting can be admired permanently in the Gallery of Honor of the Rijksmuseum.
