In collaboration with the GGD, the Municipality of The Hague is starting to provide targeted information about the health risks of heat. Too much heat can cause serious health problems. Seniors, people with a chronic illness and homeless people are particularly at risk. As part of the information campaign, a letter plus folder with tips has already been sent to all independently living 18- seniors in the city. This concerns such a 18. addresses.

In view of the expected tropical temperatures, from tomorrow (Monday 18 July) the Hague heat plan comes into effect for the first time. That is the local translation of the national heat plan, with which it comes into effect simultaneously. The Hague is one of the first cities in the Netherlands with a local heat plan. In the plan, drawn up at the initiative of the municipality, civil society organizations in The Hague have made agreements about informing their supporters. For example, home care workers will discuss it explicitly with their clients and hand out a folder. Other partners take to the streets to hand out refillable water bottles.

The most important tipsWhat many people already know: keep yourself cool, don’t exert yourself too much and also keep your home cool. Also logical is the tip: drink enough. But what many people don’t know is that older people have a less good ‘thirst feeling’. That is why it is especially important for seniors to drink even when they are not thirsty. Especially if the color of the urine is dark yellow. This points to a lack of moisture and therefore possible dehydration.

It is also less known that some medicines work differently or less well when it is very hot. This has a major impact on health. That is why we advise you to ask your doctor or pharmacist about this.

The last tip is just for people who do not run any major health risks themselves: take care of each other! Pay extra attention to the people around you. Call each other, walk by and offer help if necessary.

Practical experiencesThe first steps for the Hague heat plan were already taken last year. Because no heat plan was announced at the time, this year is the first time that it will be put into practice. Based on practical experience, the plan will (may) be adjusted every year. The intention is also that in the coming years more and more organizations will join.
