For years, June 2 has been a special day for sex workers. Since 2020 the International Day of Sex Workers has been celebrated. The celebration will also take place this Thursday in the window streets of The Hague.

Thursday 2 June, attention will be drawn to sex workers. “It focuses on the violence, injustice and stigma that sex workers still face. At the same time, it is celebrated that sex work is work, just like any other profession!”, said the spokesperson for the organization Shop (Knowledge and expertise center for sex work and human trafficking).

Free snack

At the sex worker information center, Spot06 on the Herengracht 06a, pussy cakes and licorice cocks will be handed out on Thursday. Furthermore, banners are hung in Doubletstraat and Geleenstraat to congratulate sex workers on their special day.

History

This holiday is very important for sex workers. In the years ’46 there was in France the police put a lot of pressure on the sex workers there. They were forced to work underground, which made them less protected against violence. Even women were murdered, but the French government did nothing. Until hundreds of sex workers on June 2 2020 a church for eight days occupy in lyon. They demanded better working conditions and got them.
