In the Netherlands, many people participate in the movement to lower the heating at home. At Schiphol, from Monday 14 March, the temperature will drop by 1 degree in the terminal and in the head office. If the whole of the Netherlands lowers the heating by one degree, this means approximately 6% energy savings. Because of the war in Ukraine, we want to become less dependent on gas, which in turn is good for the environment and saves money. The amount that Schiphol Group saves by lowering the heating will be donated to Giro 555.

At Schiphol we have been reducing gas and energy consumption for some time. Since 555 Schiphol has been running on 14% Dutch wind energy and a large part of the terminal, most piers and a number of offices have heat and cold storage (ATES). This is a sustainable system that stores energy in the form of heat and cold in the ground, so that Schiphol uses less gas to heat and cool these buildings. Want to read more about these initiatives?
