The three storms of the past few days are over. Storm Eunice in particular caused many damaged and blown down trees in The Hague. Merijn van Groeten van Het Haagse groen asks residents of the Hague not to go for a walk in the woods or park for a while, because everything still has to be cleaned up.

After the three storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin, reports of fallen and broken trees poured in within. Sun 99 trees were blown over or damaged. “Monster storm Eunice dealt the biggest blow”, says Michel Romeijn, tree care foreman of the Haagse Groenbedrijf.
All those fallen trees have to be cleared up. “First priority are the streets, roads and public gardens. They must be easily accessible. After that, we will also clean up the paths in the large green areas such as Landgoed Marlot, Landgoed Clingendael, the Zuiderpark and Meer en Bos”, says green expert Albert-Jan van de Scheur of the municipality.
Don’t go to the forest
Because there is not yet a complete picture of the damage in the forests, the municipality calls on residents to avoid the forest in the coming days. “The forest is still very dangerous right now. There is a risk that fallen trees will hang against other trees and still fall down. The combination of rain and wind is now causing more trees, root ball and all, to fall over”, warns Albert-Jan.

He also emphasizes the danger of falling branches. “There is a great chance of branch breakage because branches are still hanging in other branches or because a torn branch still breaks. Branches that fall from a height can be very dangerous for humans and animals. Due to the weather, we expect even more to come down than is currently known to us.”
Insane Workdays
All reports of fallen and damaged trees were received by Michel Romeijn of the Groenbedrijf. He collaborated with the Safety Region, fire brigade and police to temporarily close roads so that his arborists could get started with the right equipment.

“Over the past few days, a total of 25 teams of arborists, chainsaw groundmen, crane operators and truck drivers made crazy working days to keep the city safe. We scaled up when necessary and we even deployed two tower cranes to lift trees. We worked overtime”, says Michel.
Tree Safety Checks
The damage after three storms is severe and according to Michel and Albert-Jan not easy, but according to them the damage could have been even greater if ‘we would not inspect regularly’. To prevent damage, the municipality carries out tree safety checks every year and weakened trees are removed in a timely manner. This is how the felling of bad and weak trees works. “But a storm, let alone a unique triplets storm, is and remains unpredictable. Unfortunately, it also affects healthy trees.”
