JATO Dynamics states that governments should rely less on a gut feeling, but should look at the available vehicle data to determine the right place for a charging station.

JATO Dynamics Ltd is a globally active data provider for the automotive industry, lease companies, insurance companies, retail organizations and governments. As early as 2013, the company started processing all kinds of detailed vehicle data from new vehicles , such as prices, specifications and performance. According to Karst Broekhuisen, key account manager at JATO, a lot has happened in the automotive industry in recent years. “Where the electric car in 2013 was still a niche, they are not now more out of the street scene. This ensures that people gain insight into local and regional trends, so that they can be anticipated.”

According to Broekhuisen, the question is not whether a charging station should be installed, but in particular where this should be done to maximize occupancy rates. “By also processing the make, model and version of the vehicle, it is possible to paint a picture of the possible energy requirements at the location of the registration. This is particularly interesting because in the field of electric mobility there is a clear split between inner-city mobility and long-distance traffic. That results in a different energy requirement.”

This is mainly in the municipalities of Almere, Breda, Amsterdam, Amersfoort, Haarlemmermeer and Hoofddorp, Breda, Hoofddorp and Houten. “Logical, because this is where the leasing companies are located. But does that mean that the need for charging capacity is the same there? After all, the driver of a lease car is not the same as the registration holder.”

Placing charging stations on the basis of lease registrations therefore makes little sense, he says. “That is working with the wrong data. Moreover, you often see charging stations placed at supermarkets, sports fields or – as in the village where I live – at the town hall on the edge of the village. However, that is not where you usually want to charge your car, unless there is a fast charging station.”

According to Broekhuisen, it is especially important for entrepreneurs that the right pole is in the right place. state. “Charging is not such a problem for consumers, they can often walk three hundred meters to a pole, depending on their age. The situation is different for an independent taxi operator, for example. They receive a phone call and have to be on their way right away. Always available (fast) charging stations at the company location and especially on the road are then of great importance”, he says.

Make wishes clear JATO Dynamics can not only show governments down to street level where electric vehicles are registered, but can also provide information about, among other things, the age of the person who registered the vehicle. In addition, it is also possible to gain insight into the type of registration, for example a taxi company. “By using this data, electric drivers can be supported as much as possible.”

Broekhuisen emphasizes, however, that communication from the electric driver to the municipality is also important, in order to make clear what the loading requirements. “Certainly for taxi companies, it is of great importance to have a (fast) charging facility available before the electric vehicles are actually operational.”
