The National Reading Days (10 January to 5 February) are the perfect time to draw attention to reading aloud. Alderman Hilbert Bredemeijer (Education) therefore handed over the picture book Muk to Hilda Booymans from Oosterlee preschool in the Escamp Library on Wednesday. To encourage reading in pre-schools, the municipality of The Hague is giving the picture book Muk and associated teaching materials to all pre-schools in The Hague as a gift.
Reading to children at a young age is extremely important for children’s language development. The pre-school uses a method that optimally stimulates the development of the child. Reading plays an important role in this.
Every year, during the National Reading Days, many preschools with parents and toddlers to the libraries of The Hague to be read from the picture book of the year. The book that is nationally central this year during the National Reading Days 2022 is ‘But first I caught a monster’ by Tjibbe Veldkamp. For the toddlers, the library chose another book from the picture books Top 10 to work with: Muk, written by Mark Haayema .
Due to the corona measures, it is not yet possible for the reading consultants of The Hague Library possible to receive groups. Alderman Bredemeijer therefore handed over the picture book Muk to Hilda Booymans from Oosterlee preschool on Wednesday at the start of the National Reading Days. In doing so, he underlines the importance of reading and being read to and the important work that the reading counselors do to stimulate children in The Hague in their reading development.
