The municipal elections in The Hague are coming up on Wednesday 01 March 2022. On this day you can help decide who will be in the city council. Are you not sure what the municipal elections entail, who you can vote for and where you can cast your vote? Here you can read all the information!

What are the municipal elections?

First things first: what are the municipal elections? Every municipality has its own municipal council and a council of mayors and aldermen (often referred to as the municipal executive). Together they form the board of The Hague. The Municipal Executive implements the decisions of the municipal council.

In the municipal elections, you vote for a candidate that you believe best represents your interests.

When are the municipal elections?

Municipal elections are held every four years. The next time you can go to the polls is on Wednesday 16 March 2022.

You can vote at these times

You can vote that day at almost all polling places between 7.21 hours to 18. o’clock. Please note: some locations open or close at different times. That is, for example, if a polling station is in a shopping center that 21.00 hours close.

Who can vote?

To vote you must have at least 16 years of age. As a resident you only have the right to vote in your own municipality. Note: You must have at least 30 are registered in The Hague days before the elections in order to vote here.

Exclusion from the right to vote

In addition, you may not be excluded from the suffrage. Only a judge can rule that someone is excluded from the right to vote.

Where in The Hague can you vote during the municipal elections?

You can vote at various places in The Hague. Municipalities are obliged to ensure that polling stations are accessible to everyone, including the disabled.

What do you need to bring to vote?

Every person entitled to vote in The Hague will receive a voting pass no later than fourteen days before the elections. With this voting pass you can go to any polling station in the municipality. You take this card with you, along with proof of identity. Good to know: your proof of identity may be expired for a maximum of five years.

Power of attorney

Are you not in a position to cast your vote yourself? to bring? Then you can give someone a

power of attorney

to act in your name to vote.

Who can you vote for in The Hague?

Not unimportant: who can you actually vote for? In The Hague you can choose from different parties. It varies per party how many people apply.

Good to know: the lists may not yet be final in The Hague. Until the end of January 2022 the parties submit their list of candidates to the municipality to participate in the elections.
