The municipality of Rotterdam is going to start using so-called smart charging stations. The first 100 copies will be placed in the city over the next three months. The municipality opts for these charging stations because they would contribute to stabilizing the electricity grid.

Wednesday, Arno Bonte, Alderman for Sustainability, unveiled the first smart charging station on Olympiaweg in Rotterdam South. More and more electric cars are being added to the city. The municipality applauds this because they contribute to better air quality. However, charging these vehicles requires a lot from the electricity network.

Smart charging stations offer a solution, according to the municipality. The new charging stations will be equipped with smart charging techniques such as Smart Charging and Vehicle to Grid. This would enable electric cars to store a surplus of sustainably generated power and then feed it back to the grid at peak times.

Efficient use of energy Bonte expects electric cars in combination with smart charging stations to form an important link in making the electricity network future-proof. “We are generating more and more energy sustainably with solar panels and wind turbines. That energy is not available evenly throughout the day. With smart poles, cars are charged when there is a surplus of electricity and charging is stopped or they feed back to the power grid when the supply is less. That is efficient use of energy.”

Smart Charging and Vehicle to Grid The municipality will experiment with both charging techniques. With Smart Charging, the charging sessions of electric vehicles are controlled remotely. By charging slower or faster at specific times, peaks in electricity demand would be prevented and the available sustainable power would be better distributed. It is also stated that the charging speed is adjusted at the right time in order to optimally use the available grid capacity, without the electric driver being affected.

With Vehicle to Grid, sustainable energy must be used. temporarily stored in the batteries of electric cars. When there is a high demand for electricity, it is the intention that the stored electricity is returned to the electricity grid via the new charging stations. The expectation that the municipality outlines is that more and more electric cars will be equipped with this software in the future.
