In the center of The Hague, the 61 year old Karin Dijkstra the vintage shop ‘It’s a Bird!’ opened. “I really want to create a living room feeling here. You can buy clothes and plants from me, but you can also come in for a cup of coffee and a good conversation.”

Karin has made quite a switch. Before opening her shop, she worked as a teacher in an elementary school. She found that she wanted more freedom in her life. “I decided I wanted to do something completely different and started this shop.”

Looking for vintage gems for the store

Vintage clothing is not new to Karin. “I often went to exclusive parties with my boyfriend. We made it a sport to find a nice outfit for very little. We received many compliments from the other guests on our vintage clothing.”

She is now also looking for gems for the store. “I sell clothes from the better brands. It’s a Bird is not a thrift store. I’m really looking for the nicer stuff.” The stuff in the store comes from everywhere and nowhere. “The candlesticks, plants and pots come from a few wholesalers.”

Vintage purses and bags full of clothes

In addition to a few fair Karin mainly sells a lot of vintage clothing that is new in the store. “I found the second-hand clothes at vintage fairs. Other clothes have been brought in by friends and people from the neighbourhood. I look for the best clothes, the rest I bring to charity.”

Inspiration from an unexpected corner

The cheerful canary yellow facade is striking. Karin came up with the name of the store by accident. “When I went to look at the property, a boy cycled by who waved his arms like wings and shouted ‘I’m a bird!’ My daughter, Merel, is also named after a bird. That’s how I came up with the name of the store.”

Cosy collection of things

The store is a cozy gathering of different things . In addition to clothing, Karin also sells bags made from recycled basketballs, various types of journals and other gift items. The vintage photo frames are striking. “They come from the antique shop that was in the shop before, just like the furniture that is for sale.”

It’s a Bird is located at Nieuwe Molstraat 30a and is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 00:

until 12: 00 o’clock. Karin’s shop is closed on Mondays. “Then I will use the space for coaching. The living room feeling also comes in handy during the coaching sessions. Everyone feels comfortable here.”
